About the game
Trapped in a nightmare of your own making
Kindling is a dark, atmospheric action roguelite where fire is survival. You play a witch trapped in a nightmare of her own making. There are no health bars: one hit kills you, and one hit kills them. Place campfires to hold back the shadows, unleash them to burn everything nearby, and break the coven seals that lead deeper. Every death makes you stronger. Every seal brings you closer to the truth of what you did.
You wake beside a dying fire in a forest that whispers accusations you cannot quite remember. Your staff lies somewhere ahead. Your three sisters, Morveth, Branwen and Cerys, are gone, and the seals that bind this place burn blue with their memories. Break them to descend. Each one you break wakes the Heartwood, and it will come for you.
Kindling is a descent through five layers of a burning nightmare, past the Ashweaver, a bloated queen that births cindermites from ash, and down to the Heartwood itself. Runs are short and sharp. Between them you return to the witch’s chamber and spend ember fragments on forbidden power. Skills you died holding cost less next time.
Somewhere along the way the fire stops asking who you are. You are becoming what hunts you.
How it plays
-
No health bars
One hit kills you. One hit kills them. The Inner Flame saves you from death exactly once, if it has had time to charge.
-
Fire is the toolset
Campfires slow the shadows and show you where they are. Unleash one to burn everything around it, and the next fire comes sooner.
-
Break the seals
Coven seals hold your sisters’ memories. Every seal you break opens the way down, and wakes the Heartwood a little more.
-
Forbidden power
Spend ember fragments in the witch’s chamber between runs. Meteor Strike, Wraith Walk, Ashbrand, and a skill tree that remembers how you died.
-
The Pale Echo
Hold twelve souls and stop the world for ten seconds. Enemies freeze, show themselves, and wait for you to decide.
-
Short, sharp descents
Runs of around fifteen minutes through five layers and two bosses, with permanent progression, hidden notes, and secrets in the ash.
